I picked up the phone and punched in the numbers.
Please don’t pick up, please don’t pick up, I thought to myself.
They picked up.
And, so, I said my spiel…
(I had it written down.)
“Hi! I’m Sylvia Hall and I’m a local jewelry designer living here in Kansas City. I was wondering if I could pop by your shop sometime this week to show you some of my latest designs? I’d love to sell my jewelry in your shop…”
I said it, but even as I was saying it, I wasn’t really sure who the hell I thought I was.
I hadn’t been making jewelry for very long.
And I most certainly felt like an imposter.
But there was plenty of truth in that line I spouted out.
Yes, that was my name. Yes, I was local.
Yes, I would love to sell my stuff in their shop.
But to call myself a jewelry designer felt... laughable.
But here’s the simple thing I’ve learned:
House painters paint houses.
Writers write.
Bankers bank.
And people who design/create/make jewelry are inevitably jewelry designers.
There’s a lot of mixed opinions in regard to ‘faking it until you make it’ and I am absolutely an advocate and here’s why:
Because EVERYONE is just faking it.
Or… another way to look at it (and this is my favorite!):
EVERYONE HAS ALREADY MADE IT!
Just by being here. Just by being born.
All the world's a stage and we can be, do, and have anything we really want.
Most people block the confidence they crave because they think confidence comes from some outside source.
Like from some sort of stamp of approval or letter of recommendation.
That is not how confidence is created.
And that, right there is the secret.
Confidence is created.
But not by our results, but instead BY OUR MINDS.
Confidence comes from our minds.
If we think, feel, and believe confident thoughts about ourselves, we create a confident identity.
And the way we see ourselves (our identity) is a pivotal part of how we show up in the world and the impact we can make.
The confidence secret is that confident people know how to manufacture confidence, because they know where confidence is manufactured.
IN. OUR. MINDS.
Confidence is created by the stories we tell about ourselves.
The confidence secret is that.
Confidence is something you can CREATE.
Confident people tell kinder gentler stories about themselves, their world, how they are doing, and why they are here.
Confident people live in alignment with their truth.
There is CONGRUENCE with their words and actions.
I’ve experienced this for myself and seen it in customers and clients over the years.
We want to believe that confidence comes when we DO something.
When we’ve earned the title…
When we achieve the raise…
But that’s not how confidence works.
I know, because even after achieving every single thing on my checklist of creations, I would still sometimes lose connection to my own confidence.
And then, in a flash, I would experience it again.
It was NEVER (not ever!) dependent on what I “achieved” but instead, it would vary based on ONE SINGLE THING:
the stories in my mind.
I could weave a story that would make me feel pretty terrible.
And try it on like a track suit.
Ugh. Then! I would weave a story that felt pretty terrific.
And slide into that like a track suit.
And, there was an undeniable consistency:
My confidence was not dependent on my achievement, successes, or any of that.
My lived, FELT, pulsating confidence was there when I used my mind in a meaningful and useful way.
Confidence is manufactured in our mind.
So, what does that mean for you?
It means if you are READY to snap your fingers and become your most confident self, you don’t have to wait another day.
You don’t have to wait another moment!
You simply need to use your mind in a more meaningful and useful way.
The story you tell about yourself will shape your entire world.
You are the master of your own fate with this incredible secret.
Begin to practice this insight.
It’s worth the time and effort.
With confidence you can create anything you want for your life.
with love and appreciation,
Sylvia
